What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant structural protein in the body. It is an important part of connective tissue and occurs in dozens of types, depending on the tissue and its function. You can find collagen in the skin, blood vessels, joints, bones and tendons. These are precisely parts of animals we eat less and less of.

Collagen mainly contains the non-essential amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline. These amino acids are much less abundant in other protein sources.

Collagen is not a complete protein because it does not contain all the essential amino acids.

The 2 types of collagen in NoordCode Pure Collagen

At least 26 types of collagen have been defined. Each type of collagen contains slightly different amino acids. So it is a good strategy to take different types of collagen if you want to support your own collagen production in the different areas. The most common collagen types are:

• Type I collagen is the most abundant collagen in the body, found mainly in skin, hair, nails, bones and ligaments.
• Type II collagen is mainly found in cartilage between joints.
• Type III collagen is common, along with type I in the skin and blood vessels.
• Type IV collagen is crucial for the formation of basal membranes, a specific type of thin layer that separates cells from underlying structures.
• Type V collagen is found in the skin and placenta and co-occurs with type I.
• Type X collagen is part of the bone and cartilage structure.

Collagen hydrolysate is produced by enzymatically cutting the large collagen protein into smaller pieces. This 'pre-digestion' allows your body to absorb the amino acids faster. Another advantage is that collagen hydrolysate dissolves well in liquid, making it very user-friendly.
