The importance of electrolytes

Electrolytes are charged particles (often minerals) that perform important bodily functions. Well-known electrolytes are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. You get these substances from food and lose them through sweat and urine.

When to take extra electrolytes

In these situations, you might consider taking more electrolytes:

  • When you sweat a lot, such as in the sauna, during sports or in hot weather.
Through sweat, you lose both water and electrolytes. Add both to maintain your water balance.
  • When you follow a low-carbohydrate/ketogenic diet.
When you eat carbohydrates daily, your body retains more salt. Therefore, when your carbohydrate intake is low, you lose electrolytes faster.
  • When you eat a lot of fresh produce that is low in salt.
Processed foods often contain added salt. If you cook with fresh products, you usually add less salt.
  • When (water) fasting.
It is wise to take electrolytes when you are fasting. This helps with your energy levels and fatigue, among other things.

In those cases, an electrolyte supplement provides you with extra electrolytes in an easy and tasty way.

Optimal electrolytes ratios

The composition of NoordCode Electrolytes Lemon Orange is:

  • 1000 mg sodium
  • 400 mg potassium (20% RI)
  • 76 mg magnesium (20% RI)

NoordCode has based this optimal electrolytes ratio on the following factors.

Sodium:potassium ratio

The body uses sodium and potassium together to maintain the amount of water inside and outside cells.

There is no absolute "perfect" ratio of sodium to potassium that applies to everyone, but health organizations recommend general guidelines.

According to most guidelines, the ideal ratio of sodium to potassium is somewhere between 1:1 and 1:2. For every gram of sodium, you should get about 1-2 grams of potassium.

NoordCode opts for a ratio of sodium:potassium of 5:2. This assumes you also get potassium through food, such as fruit, potatoes, meat, avocado and leafy vegetables. So your total sodium:potassium intake will still end up around a 1:2 ratio.

The amount of magnesium

You get most magnesium from magnesium-rich foods such as leafy greens, nuts and seeds. 76 mg of magnesium makes a nice contribution to your daily intake.

High-quality ingredients

The mix contains unrefined sea salt as a source of sodium. Besides sodium, this salt also contains many other trace minerals that give this salt its characteristic colour and rich flavour. Unrefined sea salt is a natural source of sodium that has not been chemically processed. A potential disadvantage of unrefined sea salt is contamination. We, therefore, use only very pure salt that is tested free of heavy metals and microplastics.

For this formula, we use Potassium Citrate, the form recommended by nutrition experts.

The 76 mg of magnesium comes from Aquamin™ Mg, magnesium oxide from seawater.

Sodium and Chloride from Salt

When we talk about salt, we often refer to sodium chloride. Sodium chloride is the main component of all salts. Salt provides sodium and chloride, which are both electrolytes. By weight, salt consists of 40% sodium and 60% chloride.

NoordCode Electrolytes contains 1.1 g of sodium and approximately 1.6 g of chloride from sea salt per serving.

Sugar-free mix suitable for fasting and keto

NoordCode Electrolytes Lemon Orange contains no added sugar and very few carbohydrates. It is free from allergens and GMOs. This makes it a perfect fit for a ketogenic or low-carbohydrate diet. The calories per serving are so low that they do not interfere with your (water) fasting. So you can always enjoy this tasty electrolyte mix that delivers the promised electrolytes without unnecessary additives.

European alternative to LMNT Recharge

The most well-known and popular electrolyte mix is LMNT Recharge. Thought leaders widely praise this US electrolyte mix as a functional, low-sugar, and tasty electrolyte drink. Unfortunately, LMNT no longer supplies Europe and other US brands are expensive due to import costs.

NoordCode Electrolytes are now your European alternative.

Flavour and variants

The fresh lemon-orange flavour comes from natural flavours and is sweetened with stevia. Other flavours are:

Recommended usage

NoordCode Electrolytes Lemon Orange is a ready-to-use electrolyte drink. Add it to water, mix well, and your drink is ready!

Dissolve 8 grams (2 scoops) in 1 liter of water using a shaker or blender.
1 scoop filled up to the upper mark provides approximately 4 grams.
You can control the saltiness. Choose a bold version with little water, or add more water to keep it subtle. Find your perfect salt/water ratio.

Electrolytes Lemon Orange is an acidic drink. Like all common acidic drinks (orange juice, lemon water, soda, coffee, sports drinks) it is recommended to drink a serving in one sitting, instead of sipping throughout the day. Continuous exposure to acidic foods or drinks can erode teeth enamel.
Dentists recommend to use water to restore the pH in your mouth after finishing a serving of an acidic drink. Alternatively, using a straw reduces exposure of your teeth to the acidity.

Leave the silica gel bag in the jar and close the lid quickly and fully between uses to prevent clumping.

One package of NoordCode Electrolytes Lemon Orange contains 250 g, sufficient for 31 portions.

Store dry, cool, well-sealed, away from light, and out of reach of young children.
