French Press  |  Pour Over  |  Aeropress  |  The Moka Pot   Espresso Machine

So you have purchased your healthy organic, high polyphonic and mycotoxin-free coffee grinds or beans.
And now you're looking for a brewing method that suits you and optimizes your perfect grind.

French Press

WHAT IT IS

A French Press is a simple manual brewing method that involves steeping and filtering coffee, similarly to a cup of tea. Because of the steeping, this method takes a bit longer than other manual brewing processes, but produces an incredibly flavorful cup.

FACTS

- Brew method: steep

- Time: 5-10 min

- Grind: coarse

- Filter method: metal

- Coffee / water ratio: 1:13 (in grams)

- Water temp: 85-95℃

- Price: €

WHY IT IS FOR YOU

If you’re looking for a simple manual brewing method, which gives a much richer brew than a drip machine would. We use it personally to keep superfood lattes, Bulletproof Coffee, herb infusions and tonics flowing all day.

WHY WE RECOMMEND IT

At NoordCode, we’re all about The French Press because it is made of glass and stainless steel, so you don't have to deal with toxins released from the material you're brewing the coffee with. The stainless steel mesh filter allows the coffee’s natural oils to pass, which not only improves flavor, but also preserves polyphenols.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Put the coffee in the press and shake gently to even out the ground coffee.

  2. Add water in a circular motion, moistening all the ground coffee, until the press is half full.

  3. Gently stir the coffee grounds with a chopstick or spoon.

  4. After 4 minutes, slowly push the plunger all the way down.

  5. Pour the coffee immediately to prevent over-extraction.

Pour Over

WHAT IT IS

The Pour Over method is basically a manual old fashioned filter coffee. You control the whole process yourself, which involves pouring hot water through coffee grounds in a filter. The water drains through the coffee and filters into a carafe.

FACTS

- Brew method: Drip

- Time: 2-3 minutes

- Grind: Medium-Coarse

- Filter method: Paper or metal

- Coffee / water ratio: 1:17 (in grams)

- Water temp: 85-95℃

- Price: €€

WHY IT IS FOR YOU

If you want to recreate that hip coffee spot at home.

WHY WE RECOMMEND IT

Similar to the French Press, The Pour Over is made of glass, making the method a non-toxic way to brew coffee. Using a metal filter preserves the oils in the coffee and makes it a healthy cup of joe.

NEED TO KNOWS

- The Pour Over method requires patience. It is a matter of slowly pouring the water over the coffee in circles. A longer exposure of coffee to hot water increases the amount of antioxidants in the brewed coffee.

- Use a metal filter for your Pour Over.

- If you do choose a paper filter, make sure it is an unbleached paper filter and wet it before use. This will prevent a paper taste in your coffee.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Carefully pour 50 ml of water in the middle of the coffee in a constant stream and let it brew for 30 seconds.

  2. Slowly pour on the remaining water from the center (in about 4 minutes), making circles pouring about 1 centimeter from the edge.

  3. Tap the filter to make the coffee that is at the top of the rim fall down, so you get a better extraction.

Aeropress

WHAT IT IS

The AeroPress is a relatively new method that uses air pressure to make a very high quality (single serve) espresso. Unlike a French Press - which uses gentle pressure to pass the brewed coffee through the strainer - the AeroPress uses more intense air pressure to extract the coffee and press it through the filter.

FACTS

- Brew method: Pressure

- Time: 2-3 minutes

- Grind: Fine

- Filter method: paper or metal

- Coffee / water ratio: 1:10 (in grams)

- Water temp: 85-95℃

- Price: €€

WHY IT IS FOR YOU

If you want to achieve almost the same quality of an espresso but in a convenient and portable design for on the go. Ideal for vacations!

NEED TO KNOWS

- Opt for a metal filter over paper to preserve the best parts of the coffee and to avoid the paper taste that gets into the coffee through a paper filter.

- The AeroPress is done in plastic and therefore is not completely toxin-free coffee making. Although it is BPA-free in this case, you are better off going for glass or stainless steel coffee brewing methods (such as an espresso machine, french press and pour over).

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Set the Aeropress on a sturdy mug and place a rounded scoop of fine ground coffee in the holder. Shake to even out the coffee.

  2. Add filtered water to level 1 of the holder (80°C for an espresso and cold water for a cold brew).

  3. Stir the ground coffee into the water for about 10 seconds (espresso) or 1 minute for a cold brew.

  4. Place the rod on the holder and press gently until you feel resistance and the rod has reached the bottom.

The Moka Pot

WHAT IT IS

Originating in Italy, the Moka Pot is a stove top or electric coffee maker that brews coffee by running boiling water under steam through ground coffee.

FACTS

- Brew method: Pressure

- Time: 2 minutes

- Grind: Fine

- Filter method: Metal

- Coffee / Water ratio: 1:7 (in grams)

- Water temp: 85-95℃

- Price: €

WHY IT IS FOR YOU

You want a taste similar to espresso, you like simplicity and you’re on a budget, this is your choice!

NEED TO KNOWS

Always opt for a stainless steel version of the Moka Pot and ditch the aluminum version. Aluminum is a neurotoxin [*] and with exposure to heat, aluminum leaks into the coffee, making this a toxic drink.

HOW IT WORKS

The beauty of the Moka Pot is in its three-chambered brewing process.

1. You put water in the lower chamber and the grind in the middle chamber.

2. When the water boils in the lower chamber, the steam creates a pressure that pushes the water through the ground coffee in the upper chamber.

3. There's your brewed espresso!

Espresso machine

WHAT IT IS

This needs no explanation. Whether you've been to Italy or visited a Starbucks, you know what an espresso machine is and what it's capable of...

FACTS

- Brew method: Pressure

- Time: < 1 minute

- Grind: Fine

- Filter method: Metal

- Coffee / Water ratio: 1:2 (in grams)

- Water temp: 85-95℃

- Price: €€€€

WHY WE RECOMMEND IT

Third in the line of a healthy brewing method. A metal machine, a metal filter.... need we say more?

WHY IT IS FOR YOU

If you’re in an intense relationship with coffee and want to give your grinds the best treatment they deserve and don’t mind spending $$$$ on it.

NEED TO KNOWS

Be sure to place the fully primed portafilter under the machine immediately when you start brewing espresso. If you wait too long (i.e., half a minute), the machine will burn the coffee grounds.

HOW IT WORKS

  1. Start with a clean portafilter and a clean group head.

  2. Dispense your coffee grounds correctly and distribute them in the portafilter.

  3. Use a stamper to press the grounds evenly and consistently (i.e., not too hard and not too soft).

  4. Insert the portafilter and begin brewing immediately.
