Best electrolytes: product notes

#1 NoordCode Performance Electrolytes – Lemon-Orange

Electrolyte formula

Each 6,5 g serving provides 1000 mg sodium and 1500 mg chloride from unrefined sea salt. This salt is carefully washed to remove microplastics. It also contains well-absorbed forms of potassium and magnesium. The 400 mg potassium comes as potassium citrate, and the 100 mg Aquamin™ Mg Soluble magnesium is a magnesium citrate from sea minerals with natural trace elements. Flavour comes from natural flavourings and the sweetener stevia. The product contains no sugar. NoordCode Performance Electrolytes is laboratory-tested for heavy metals. No additional vitamins or calcium are present.

Amount of sodium and potassium

For its Performance Electrolytes, NoordCode opts for a sodium-to-potassium ratio of 5:2. There are two reasons for this relatively high salt content. The focus of NoordCode Performance Electrolytes is on replenishing sodium and chloride because these are lost the most through sweat (sport, sauna, hot weather) and urine (during (water) fasting, paleo, keto and low-carb diets). Secondly, NoordCode targets a group that prepares meals with fresh, pure ingredients. This group consumes less salt because they eat little processed (sodium-rich) food such as bread, cold cuts, ready-made sauces and snacks.

Verdict on NoordCode Performance Electrolytes

  • Sugar-free
  • Negligible amount of carbohydrates.
  • Contains the minerals sodium, potassium and magnesium.
  • Well-absorbed forms of minerals.
  • Both the sodium and the magnesium are from natural sources.
  • Highly suitable for (water) fasting, paleo, keto and low-carb diets, and situations in which you sweat a lot, such as sport, sauna and heat.
  • Produced in Europe.
  • Pure and tested in an independent laboratory for heavy metals.
  • The highest amount of electrolytes.

NoordCode Performance Electrolytes have the best price–quality ratio. The Performance Electrolytes are also available in a tub, making them even more economical. The better alternative to LMNT!

#2 LMNT Zero-Sugar Electrolytes – Citrus

Electrolyte formula

Each stick provides 1000 mg of sodium, 200 mg of potassium and 60 mg of magnesium. LMNT uses sodium chloride extracted from a 300-million-year-old salt deposit in Hutchinson, Kansas. The salt is obtained by evaporation and is not further refined. Potassium comes from potassium chloride, and magnesium from magnesium malate. The product contains no sugar. Flavour comes from natural flavourings and the sweetener stevia. No additional vitamins or calcium are present.

Amount of sodium and potassium

LMNT has chosen a sodium-to-potassium ratio of 5:1. Like NoordCode, LMNT’s primary goal is to replenish sodium and chloride because these are lost the most through sweat (in athletes and in the sauna) and urine (during (water) fasting, paleo, keto and low-carb diets). LMNT also assumes a target group that eats little sodium-rich food.

Verdict on LMNT Electrolytes

  • Sugar-free and low in carbohydrates.
  • Contains the minerals sodium, potassium and magnesium.
  • Relatively little magnesium, but a well-absorbed form.
  • Only the sodium is from a natural source.
  • Potassium chloride is very cheap, but less suitable for daily use.
  • Suitable for (water) fasting, paleo, keto and low-carb diets, and situations in which you sweat a lot, such as sport, sauna and heat.
  • Produced in the US.
  • No independent lab tests for heavy metals.
  • Relatively expensive (and not available in tubs).
  • Not delivered in the EU.

LMNT Electrolytes is the runner-up, but not available in the EU.

#3 SALTE Electrolytes – Lemon (30 pack)

Electrolyte formula

One 5,55 g sachet contains 800 mg of sodium, 400 mg of potassium, 60 mg of magnesium, and 1620 mg of chloride. The minerals are provided as sodium chloride, potassium chloride and magnesium malate. The product is sugar-free. Flavour comes from natural flavourings and the sweetener stevia. Contains no vitamins or calcium.

Amount of sodium and potassium

SALTE opts for a sodium-to-potassium ratio of 2:1. The amount of sodium (800 mg) is derived from the amount you lose on average per litre of sweat.

Verdict on SALTE

  • Contains the minerals sodium, potassium and magnesium.
  • Well-absorbed forms of minerals.
  • Not transparent about the amount of carbohydrates per 100 g or per sachet.
  • None of the minerals is of natural origin.
  • Suitable for low-carb or keto diets, and situations in which you sweat a lot (gym, beach or heat).
  • Unclear where it is produced.
  • No independent lab test for heavy metals.
  • Good price/quality ratio.

Salte Electrolytes ends up at the third place with a good price/quality ratio.

#4 ESN Electrolytes Pro – Natural Lemon

Electrolyte formula

Contains per 22,5 g sachet 660 mg of sodium, 150 mg of potassium, 59 mg of calcium and 28 mg of magnesium. Most of the serving consists of dextrin (carbohydrates) and citric acid. There is 1,10 g of sugar present. The minerals are provided as sodium bicarbonate/chloride/citrate, potassium chloride/citrate, magnesium citrate and calcium gluconate.

Amount of sodium and potassium

ESN has derived the amount per mineral from the amounts lost in sweat. Per litre of sweat, about 400–1,200 mg of sodium is lost. For potassium that is 200–600 mg, for magnesium 10–30 mg and for calcium 20–40 mg.

Verdict on ESN Electrolytes Pro

  • Contains the minerals sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
  • A large part of the contents consists of carbohydrates.
  • The amount of calcium is relatively high
  • The magnesium content is relatively low.
  • Less well-absorbed forms of minerals, not of natural origin.
  • Not transparent about the amount of chloride.
  • Contains sugar
  • Unclear where it is produced.
  • No independent lab test for heavy metals.
  • Suitable for athletes who have no issue with sugar.
  • Relatively expensive compared with the other electrolytes.

#5 Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier – Lemon Lime

Electrolyte formula

Liquid I.V. combines electrolytes and B vitamins. One 16 g stick provides 500 mg of sodium and 370 mg of potassium. It also contains 62 mg of vitamin C, 19,3 mg of niacin, 9,6 mg of pantothenic acid, 1,93 mg of vitamin B6 and 5,79 µg of vitamin B12. Sugar comes from cane and grape sugar (10 g sugar and 11 g carbohydrates per serving). The product lacks magnesium and calcium. The main proposition is that carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions enhance water absorption during physical exercise.

Amount of sodium and potassium

No rationale regarding the choice and amounts of the minerals present.

Verdict on Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier

  • Contains a large amount of sugar
  • Contains the minerals sodium and potassium (from non-natural sources).
  • Contains an anti-caking agent.
  • Contains B vitamins and vitamin C.
  • Unclear where it is produced.
  • No independent lab test for heavy metals.
  • For sport, outdoor adventures, hot weather and travel, but only if you have no issue with large amounts of sugar.
  • Low price/quality ratio.
